A Family Business
Don Diebolt spent several years in the late 1970s and early 1980s managing
Diebolt Lumber & Supply at La Harpe for his dad, Lawrence Diebolt. Then,
in 1986, Don and his wife, Susan, ventured out on their own to build a
very successful kitchen and bath business on the Iola square. This
business eventually specialized in Corian countertops and Wood-Mode
cabinetry and was known as Kitchens & More, and kept them busy for the
next 12 years.
Now Don is in his seventh year at the helm of Diebolt Lumber, the largest privately owned lumber yard in Southeast Kansas, and exciting things are happening. Don and Susan purchased the business on Jan. 1, 1999 from Don’s parents, Lawrence and Rachel Diebolt, and had their Grand Re-opening in the spring of ‘99. This year has been a very successful 10-Day April Super Sale and a 10 Day Fall Savings Extravaganza including a 1 Day Trade Fair, which have attracted many new customers from far and wide.
This family business, which Don is so proud to be owner and manager of, is actually the result of a fire. Lawrence Diebolt moved to La Harpe in 1949. In 1951 a fire destroyed his barn. After rebuilding the barn with native oak lumber, he sold the remaining lumber by placing an ad in the newspaper.
When the lumber was sold, people continued to ask for more. So he decided to order more oak. Those who bought the lumber asked if he had nails, bolts and building supplies to complete their building needs. Next thing you know Lawrence was in the lumber business!
In 1977, there was another fire that destroyed Diebolt’s main headquarters. Now Diebolt Lumber has a 10,000 square foot display floor and other buildings on 10 acres of land. The business is located one mile south of Highway 54 and La Harpe junction and a quarter mile east.
The grand opening of the new building was in April 1979. Diebolt Lumber employs 28 full-time employees and eight part-time. The company’s motto is "Everything to Build Anything." They have the materials and helpful employees who can put you in touch with experienced carpenters and workmen to do any job. See them today.
Diebolt offers shims to timbers, insulation, roofing, siding, plywood, fencing, doors, windows, rebar, masonry products, plastic pipe, wood storage buildings, heaters, generators and farm supplies; plus all your hardware needs: paint, tools, plumbing and electrical. Diebolt wants to be your one stop hardware and building materials headquarters. Diebolt Lumber can special order items for you, if by chance they don't have what you need in stock. They are open seven days a week with unmatched service. Delivery and tool rental is available.
And by the way, Kitchens & More is alive and well within the Diebolt main building. Come see the Kitchens & More showroom and visit with Michelle Diebolt-Smith, manager and interior design specialist.
